This year my sister Lucy and I decided to sign ourselves up for Sober October, we try and do something to raise money for Cancer Research or Macmillan every so often as a tribute to our dad.
Our dad, Ken died from bile duct cancer in April 2017 and as far as I can tell there's no specific fundraiser for bile duct cancer, I don't think a lot is still really known about it. It always amazes me that such a tiny part of the body was responsible for killing my dad. A man that was larger than life, so full of mischief with a zest for living and full of love.
How on earth was that tiny little thing the thing that kill him?
There's a certain irony that Lucy and I have chosen to do Sober October in his memory and my dad loved a glass of red wine and a brandy. Giving it up for a month in his honour seems a bit daft, but running around a muddy field or skipping every day for 30 days doesn't feel quite right either, plus I know I'd be twice as mardy about that, so saying bye bye to Malbec it is.
So far we are 8 days in (well techinically for me 10 days as I stopped on September 29th) and so far so good. On Saturday night, Lucy and I discovered the joys of "NoZeco", served in a champagne glass and sipped in front of "Strictly Come Dancing" and it could have been any other Saturday evening.

We don't tend to drink during the week, but there is something nice about that moment on a Friday evening when you know you've done for the week. If we're not going out, on a Friday, Lucy and I love a glass of red, a gossip and then to catch up with whatever series of "Real Housewives" is gracing our screens. Can we just take a moment to say, Alexis and John J leave Shannon Beador alone this season of "Real Housewives of Orange County" and how uncomfortable did Katie's husband look at the dinner party?
Anyway I digressed up a Real Housewives alleyway, we both knew we'd miss our Friday nights, so plans have been made for the next few, I'm off on a ghost hunt with my friend Marie this week (guess what next week's blog will be about?), then we are having a family Halloween night with Laura, Nate and Eve and then probably a trip to the cinema. We will catch up with the Real Housewives Saturday morning over a brew.
If you'd like to sponsor us, then that would be great, but there's absolutely no pressure, I know money is tight for people and I'd hate for anyone to think they have to. Truth be told, I know I've exceeded the target because I did a talk for the Rotary and I asked them to donate my fee to Sober October, so it's done. Anything else is a bonus and greatly appreciated.
Lucy and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us, we raise a glass of nicely chilled NoZeco to you and until there's a month where you watch John Wayne films and eat steak to raise money to find a cure for cancer, Sober October it is!
