A Christmas Trip

I've written a few times about how me and some of my friends have decided that rather than give "stuff" as pressies, we would give memories. So me, my sister Lucy and friend Gav decided that for Christmas, we would do a weekend away somewhere, which one of us would choose and for birthdays it would be a day trip. So far birthday day trips ahve included a trip to Cadbury World (Gav's choice) and Kinema in the Woods (Lucy's choice) Early next year we are off to the Harry Potter Studio Tour (my choice)

Last weekend we had a Christmas Trip, the first one since we decided to do this. It was Gav's choice and we headed to Holmfirth. On the way there we asked Gav why Holmfirth, I think Lucy and I had just assumed he was a massive fan of "The Last of the Summer Wine", but it turns out it was more because he'd been searching airbnbs and found this one that was in our price range, not too far away and we could go for 2 nights.

We stayed at the beautiful Bank Close Cottage, which was just perfect for us. It had two bedrooms, a family bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and comfy lounge. The owner had left us tea, coffee, milk, orange juice, fresh bread, croissants, jam and butter. I stupidly didn't take any pictures, so check out the link. There was parking right outside.

We dumped the car and walked into town. First stop ... the pub. A quick drink, although Gav did somehow end up with a pint of wine as the bottle was nearly empty and the barmaid said he may as well have it - welcome to Yorkshire!

The plan was to immerse ourself in all that Holmfirth had to offer and by that we meant doing "The Last of the Summer Wine" bus tour and visit the exhibition. As we sat having our drinks we decided to make a plan. It was then we ran into problem number 1. The bus tour was no longer running, the guy who ran it had taken poorly and no one had taken it over. Get well soon Colin.

That's OK we declared! We are right over the road from Nora Batty's steps and the "Last of the Summer Wine" exhibition, lets go there. We supped up and headed over.

It was then we encountered problem number 2... we'd missed the last admission to the exhibition by 5 minutes.

So a mooch around the shops it was!

After we'd been shopping, we decided we needed some liquid refreshment and we found an amazing little bar called the Hideout. There we had cocktails and chatted to the owner about the best things to do in Holmfirth, she was full of suggestions.

On day two, our mission was to make it to the "Last of the Summer Wine" exhibition, and this time we did with plenty of time to spare!

It was £4.00 each to go in and there's lots of memorabilia from the show, costumes, props that featured in episodes, a mock up of Compo's house, photos, trivia about the show, did you know the Queen was a fan? No neither did I... see you learn stuff when you go to exhibitions. There's clips of the show playing too.

It felt very nostalgic and reminded me of Sunday evenings growing up when it was always on the television. I didn't realise it hadn't finished until 2010 (see more fun trivia)

The weather wasn't the best, but we had a great time, we ate in some fab restaurants, dinner in Mexicalli I love Mexican food, so this was a winner for me and we had an amazing Sunday lunch at The Fleece Inn.

We also chilled out in our gorgeous cottage, which after a crazy busy week was just what we all needed.

We all had a fab time and made memories that I know we will talk about for years to come.

Next year, it's Lucy's choice and she's chosen a trip to Barry Island. I've got until 2026 til it's my chosen and I can't decide between Pendle, Howarth or finding one of the most haunted oubs in the UK and getting us to stay there. What do you think? Any suggestions?
