For May's Book Club, the theme is Self-Help Books.

When I first set up my book club, I decided that rather than everyone read the same book, we would have a monthly theme instead. It works really well as we all seem to manage to pick something different and then we end up swpaping and sharing what we've read. It's a brilliant way of finding out about authors and books you might never have come across otherwise.

Our members also get to choose the themes, so in May, it's Lucy's choice of self-help books. I'm going to choose "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, but here's my recommendations just incase you're struggling to choose.

1. Atomic Habits by James Clear

  • Core idea: Small habits lead to big changes.

  • Why it’s great: Practical, science-backed strategies for building good habits and breaking bad ones—easy to apply immediately.

  • Perfect for: Anyone looking to improve productivity, health, or mindset without overhauling their life overnight.

2. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

  • Core idea: Personal and professional effectiveness through principles like proactivity, goal setting, and synergy.

  • Why it’s great: A timeless framework that blends productivity, leadership, and personal growth.

  • Perfect for: People who want both structure and purpose in how they approach life and work.

3. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck by Mark Manson*

  • Core idea: You can’t care about everything—choose your values wisely.

  • Why it’s great: Raw, humorous, and brutally honest. Encourages you to embrace discomfort and live with intention.

  • Perfect for: Those who are tired of toxic positivity and want something more grounded and real.

4. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

  • Core idea: Influence and connection are built through empathy, listening, and genuine interest in others.

  • Why it’s great: Classic social skills advice that’s still relevant in the digital age.

  • Perfect for: Anyone looking to improve relationships—personally or professionally.

5. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

  • Core idea: Your mindset and beliefs shape your reality and financial success.

  • Why it’s great: A foundational book in personal development and financial success, blending philosophy with goal-setting.

  • Perfect for: Entrepreneurs, creatives, and go-getters focused on success and self-belief.
